Michael : Good morning Stephen. Firstly I'd like to really thank you for taking part in this podcast.

Stephen : My pleasure.

Michael : Would you just start by giving our listeners a brief introduction as to who you are and what you do?

Stephen : Well, I'm a psychologist. I live in San Diego, California. And professionally speaking, for the last thirty two-thirty three years, I've been doing a variety of therapeutic work, coaching work related to hypnotic work.

I started out in the late seventies as a student of UC Santa Cruz and I was a student of Bandler and Grinder, I actually met them when they first got together - I was a student of Grinders. And about a year into that they went out and met Milton Erickson and I was just thoroughly taken by what they had brought back, and the next time they went I went with them and met Erickson in 1974 and became a student of his for the next six years until he died in 1980.

So a lot of my work has that as a core - Ericksonian hypnotic trance, and a number of other things have become integrated into that over the years, including a lot of stuff from Aikido and Buddhism, and some from other aspects of psychology.

Michael : From your point of view, what is hypnosis, what does the term mean to you?

Stephen :Well I think it's important to distinguish between hypnosis and trance, most people don't, and it leads to a lot of misunderstanding. So in order to define hypnosis I would first have to define trance. One of the most important aspects of Erickson's legacy was emphasising trance, not as artificial, but as naturalistic, and that is it doesn't come from hypnotic suggestion, it comes from consciousness itself - that it's a natural part of peoples learning states and of their consciousness. I think we could say in the most succinct way that trance is the way that occurs any time that identity is disrupted.....

Michael : To kick it off would you introduce yourself so that our listeners know a little bit about who you are and what you do?

John : Well my name is John, my last name is La Valle, and I think most people might know who I am apart from those who might not, I do NLP trainings, and I do lot of them with Richard Bandler, I also take care of the administrative things for the Society of NLP for Richard. I do a lot of training, I co-wrote a book with Richard of Persuasion Engineering, sales and business, things like that – I think that most people would probably know who I am though.

Michael : What is hypnosis?

John : Hypnosis to me, really, really is nothing more than exquisite, really exquisite communication.

What's the best NLP training format?

There are a variety of NLP training formats:

21 day practitioner, 8 day practitioner or even 3 day practitioner?
Train with 1 other person or a 1000?
Hypnotic installation or non hypnotic learning?
Modular or all in one training?
How about pre-learning or learning from DVD's

Which is best? NLP trainer Michael Beale, argues that while an eager learner will always find a way of learning from a good trainer the format does make a difference.

Do look at NLP on Wikipedia!

I was reading the section about NLP on Wikipedia and found it really good - Benefits, warts and all. So with the caveat that NLP, like a Martial Art, is about life experience - not reading, however if you do want to read about NLP its a good start. And its free!

NLP - What is it and how can you benefit from it!

NLP stands for Neuro Linguistic Programming and was created by Richard Bandler and John Grinder about 30 years ago.

What is it?

It's basically an approach to improve thinking and communication skills

Why do people do it?

For a variety of different reasons including:

• Improving what they do now
• Developing particular business skills eg leadership, sales, executive coaching, presenting with impact and influencing
• Entertainment eg Paul McKenna and Darren Brown
• Changing habits eg stopping smoking, gaining confidence etc
• Attraction, seduction and enhanced pleasure
• Personal change and development

These can have a genuine, positive and significant impact on an individuals life

Where did it come from?

NLP is based on modelling good performance. The two co-founders Richard Bandler and John Grinder started NLP by modelling people who were able to help others develop and change.

NLP is particularly useful for anyone involved in personal or company change.

What are some of the basics?

NLP is really about exploring three areas:

• Attitudes that lead to success
• Modelling what works
• Developing and using techniques that result from attitudes and modelling

What is the learning style?

Its learning by exploring. Its experiential, you learn by going first.

If there is a key skill in NLP its listening and watching without interpreting.

How has NLP helped You?

I've found that I'm much more in charge of my life, communicating is easier and it has enabled me to open a lot of new doors.

Anything else?

Communication and learning leads to change. It starts with yourself and not others. It fun, tremendously rewarding, but can involve a certain amount of personal courage.
