The difference between buisiness coaching and consulting

A senior IT manager from one of the leading banks came up with an interesting distinction between business coaching and consulting in a NLP coaching seminar we ran last month.

Coaching is where the client 'owns' the problem and the coach's role is as a catalyst or resource to help the client achieve a solution. Its actually the clients job to solve it.

In consulting the consultant takes 'ownership' of the problem and a lot of the consultants role is to qualify whether their solution will fit the clients problem or issue. Its the consultants job to solve it.

To me its a simple but very useful distinction,

Any questions give me a call.

  • Interesting point of view. However, I think it is more complex than that: ownership of the problem will not determine the outcome. Understanding the procedures will. So, I guess I would say that the difference is in quantity of the effort of clients rather than ownership of the problem.
